1. Weekly Spiritual Message

Beloved ones,

 

Each week during the Holy 50 days, servants from St Mark will highlight the spirituality of one of the saints who were part of the story of the Resurrection.

 

Lazarus is the ‘Chi’

Back in the ye olde days, people used to write differently. Texts often followed what nerds call the ‘chiastic structure’, named after the Greek letter χ (‘Chi’ ,..what we call ‘Shi’ in our Coptic alphabet).

As opposed to building up to a crescendo, writers in late antiquity would often put the ‘key’ to understanding the text in the middle of the text. This key would then unlock everything that came before it and everything coming after it. If we read the three synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke), we can see that the ‘chiastic moment’ appears to be the transfiguration, where the fullness of Christ’s Divinity is revealed.

St John’s Gospel on the other hand should come with a spoiler alert. ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.’ Thanks St. John!

So, what is there left to reveal?

In St John’s Gospel, the chiastic moment is something unexpected – the raising of Lazarus. Despite the numerous miracles performed by our Lord, it was this one in particular which became the turning point. This event enlightens us as to the reason for the incarnation of the Word – to defeat the power of death after first entering into it. But it is also the event which sets in motion the final path towards the cross. Whilst the desire to put our Lord to death was present in many other places [5:18; 7:1, 7:30], the straw the broke the camel’s proverbial back was Our Lord demonstrating His power over the final enemy of the whole of the cosmos. In granting life, He who is Life itself [11:25] was given the sentence of death – ‘So from that day on they took counsel how to put him to death.’ [11:53].

It’s not only the miracle itself, but the manner in which Our Lord accomplished it. Jesus knew everything. He knew Lazarus was dead, and that he would be raised. He need only have said the word [Matt 8:8] and it would have been accomplished without having to make the arduous journey to Bethany, where the Jews sought to stone Him [11:8].

However, this journey symbolises the Incarnation itself. The Word, seeing the death of His creation didn’t simply command from a distance, but entered into the cosmos He created, a cosmos blessed with life, which had now become a sepulchre. Our Lord’s journey wasn’t just a physical one, but an emotional one. St John tells is that ‘He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled’ seeing the suffering of Lazarus’ sisters and their friends. And finally, coming to the grave, to the place of the ‘final destiny’ of His creation, we read the shortest verse in the Holy Scriptures: ‘Jesus Wept’ [11:35]. Only Luke’s Gospel mentions Our Lord weeping, and again it is over the sight of His suffering creation [Luke 19:41].

He who did not shed a tear on the Cross wept at the death of Lazarus. Church fathers often attribute this to Jesus’ distress at the lack of faith of those around Him. But it doesn’t strike me as too out of stead with the message of the Gospel that Christ’s tears are an expression of the depth of His love. Culturally, we sometimes dismiss sadness and weeping as a marker of weakness of faith. However, Our Lord shows us that there is a place for this.

In doing this, Jesus has united himself to our deepest suffering. Sometimes we expect God to remove all suffering from our lives. Rather our Lord journeys with us through all things (except sin), making every place holy ground. We will suffer, but by God’s Grace, our suffering will become a place of transformation, as we walk hand-in-hand with Christ.

And finally, we come to the miracle itself. The Word spoke a word, which traversed the uncrossable chasm [Luke 16:26]. The light of Christ, the true Sol Invictus conquered the darkness of death. On a level closer to our daily experience, this power of Christ calls us every moment of every day. Our darkened tomb, however, is one of our own making – the spiritual entombment of sin. By reading the raising of Lazarus as an allegory for sin, we learn that through the love of Christ, sin will not conquer, if we listen to His voice. When our sin is so dire that those around us weep,… when our sin becomes an overwhelming stench,… when even those closest, our sisters and brothers, lose hope,… our Lord has the power to conquer beyond the wildest imagination of humanity. Lazarus teaches us that those whom Christ loves, and those who love Him in return, shall conquer all enemies, from the mundane daily failings to the ultimate enemy – death itself.

What about Lazarus himself? What must his life have been like? Having experienced Christ’s power over death, what must his outlook have been? According to Orthodox tradition, he went on to become the bishop of Cyprus. And what became of him there? Well, he died eventually. But what must his death have been like, having experienced the power of the Lord?

As we embrace the wisdom of Romans 12:15, “Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep,” we are excited to unveil a new initiative designed to support you in times of loss.

 

Introducing an 8-week support program, crafted to guide those mourning the loss of a loved one through their journey on earth.

 

With the Grace of God, we will host two groups each week, offering a welcoming space for all to join either the Monday or the Thursday groups (not both).

 

Updated start date: Monday Group 1 will now commence Monday 21 July.

Thursday Group 2 start-date (unchanged): Thursday 29 May

Lion’s Den Australia is a Coptic-founded, community-focused initiative that began at St. Mark’s Church and has since grown to include men from all churches and the broader community.

It’s a safe space where men can gather, talk, and grow together.

While rooted in faith, Lion’s Den serves all men—offering programs that build skills, promote health, and strengthen wellbeing.

The focus is on connection, support, and breaking the stigma around men’s mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

Avoid Parking Near Driveways or Corners: Always ensure that your vehicle does not block any driveways and that you avoid parking too close to corners, which can obstruct the view for other drivers and pedestrians.

Quiet Arrival and Departure: Please be as quiet as possible when arriving and leaving in your vehicles. This consideration will help maintain the tranquillity of our neighbourhood.

No Parking on Broe Avenue: Please observe the specific rule of not parking along Broe Avenue as this creates a traffic bottleneck which is dangerous.

Respect Neighbours’ Reserved Spots: Some neighbours may place bins or other markers to reserve parking spots for their households. Out of respect for their needs and requests, please do not move these markers or park in these reserved spots.

١.الرسالة الروحية الأسبوعية

ايها الأحباء،

كل اسبوع خلال الخمسين المقدسة، سيلقي خدام القديس مارمرقس الضوء على روحانية أحد القديسين الذين كانوا جزء من قصة القيامة.

 

 لعازر هو “تشي”

 في الأيام القديمة، كان الناس يكتبون بشكل مختلف. غالبا ما تتبع النصوص ما يسميه المجتهدون ” الهيكل المتعامد”، الذي سمي على اسم الحرف اليوناني χ “تشي”، .. ما نسميه “شي” في الأبجدية القبطية لدينا). على عكس البناء المتصاعد، غالبا ما يضع الكُتاب في العصور القديمة “المفتاح” لفهم النص في منتصف النص. سيفتح هذا المفتاح بعد ذلك كل ما جاء قبله وكل ما يأتي بعده. إذا قرأنا الأناجيل الثلاثة (متى ومرقس ولوقا)، يمكننا أن نرى أن “اللحظة الفارقة” هي لحظة التجلي، حيث يتم الكشف عن ملء ألوهية المسيح.

ماذا عن لعازر نفسه؟ كيف يجب أن تكون حياته؟ بعد أن اختبر قوة المسيح على الموت، ماذا يجب أن تكون نظرته؟ وفقا للتقاليد الأرثوذكسية، أصبح أسقف قبرص. وماذا حدث له هناك؟ حسنا، لقد مات في النهاية. ولكن كيف كون موته، بعد أن اختبر قوة الرب؟
