Beloved ones,

Each week during the Holy 50 days, servants from St Mark will highlight the spirituality of one of the saints who were part of the story of the Resurrection.

Holy Book Character: Joseph of Arimathea

Joseph of Arimathea… Anyone know anything about him? Here is my Top Ten list:

1. Prominent member of the Sanhedrin, the ruling body of the nation of Israel.
2. Good and upright
3. Did not consent to Jesus’ death.
4. Waiting for the Kingdom of God
5. Rich
6. Boldly asked Pilate for Jesus’ body
7. Put body in his new garden tomb with the help of Nicodemus. Made sure stone closed the tomb.
8. Provided the linen cloth and 75 pounds of costly spices.
9. Feared the Jews.
10. A Secret Follower of Jesus. Is that an oxymoron?

I marvel how a Secret Follower can suddenly come out of the shadows and is still talked about to this day. Theologically he did something very strategic. Our Christian faith is built on the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 15:1-4). The cross and empty tomb get all the attention, but the burial is often overlooked. We are not going to do that today.

It is always easy to assume dead bodies were buried somewhere. No way. Crucified criminals were normally taken off crosses and thrown into the garbage dump to be eaten by scavenging animals and vultures. No Joseph, No Body to resurrect. No empty tomb. Without Joseph of Arimathea, there would have been no fulfillment of the messianic promise of the Messiah being buried in a rich man’s tomb (Is. 53:9). Thank you, Joseph!

Joseph is also a good example of how it is never too late to step out and never too late to make a big difference. He had no idea he was merely loaning the tomb. Did you ever think about how much Jesus loves to use borrowed stuff? He used a borrowed feeding trough. He used a borrowed boat…. coin… boat… lunchbox… donkey… garden… upper room and he used a borrowed tomb for three days. Do you have anything you can let Jesus borrow today?

Joseph may have been a Secret Disciple for a while but when crunch time came the well-known disciples were hiding while he was making Kingdom history. The old saying goes, “Christians are like teabags, you don’t truly know what is in them until they are put in hot water.” Who am I to blast a Secret Disciple if God did not? You never know when someone is moving from fear to faith… cowardly to courageous.

The Coptic Church honours St. Joseph of Arimathea and he is celebrated in the Coptic Synaxarion. Recently, His Holiness Pope Tawadros II Consecrated the Church of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph of Arimathea in Milan, Italy in 2023.

4. Bereavement Support Groups

Dear Congregation,

As we embrace the wisdom of Romans 12:15, “Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep,” we are excited to unveil a new initiative designed to support you in times of loss.

Introducing an 8-week support program, crafted to guide those mourning the loss of a loved one through their journey on earth.

With the Grace of God, we will host two groups each week, offering a welcoming space for all to join either the Monday or the Thursday groups (not both). Monday Group 1 is starting this Monday 12/5.

This is a fresh endeavor, and we eagerly invite your feedback and ideas.

8. 40th Day Commemoration for beloved Deacon Safwat Nashed Tanios

Saturday 24 May

Timothy 4:7-8

‘I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing’

On behalf of the family of Deacon Safwat Nashed Tanios. We would like to invite you to the 40th day memorial liturgy of his passing which will take place on Saturday 24th May 2025 at 8:30am at St Marks Coptic Orthodox Church, Arncliffe.

A light meal of love and refreshments will be shared in the church hall after the conclusion of the liturgy.

The family have appreciated the support they have received since the passing of Deacon Safwat Nashed Tanios and would love to see everyone.

We ask that you continue to keep Deacon Safwat Nashed Tanios and the family in your prayers.

9. Parking Guidelines –

Please take care of our neighbours

Please take note of the following guidelines when parking your car and take care of our neighbours:

Avoid Parking Near Driveways or Corners: Always ensure that your vehicle does not block any driveways and that you avoid parking too close to corners, which can obstruct the view for other drivers and pedestrians.

Quiet Arrival and Departure: Please be as quiet as possible when arriving and leaving in your vehicles. This consideration will help maintain the tranquillity of our neighbourhood.

No Parking on Broe Avenue: Please observe the specific rule of not parking along Broe Avenue as this creates a traffic bottleneck which is dangerous.

Respect Neighbours’ Reserved Spots: Some neighbours may place bins or other markers to reserve parking spots for their households. Out of respect for their needs and requests, please do not move these markers or park in these reserved spots.

ايها الأحباء،

كل اسبوع خلال الخمسين المقدسة، سيلقي خدام القديس مارمرقس الضوء على روحانية أحد القديسين الذين كانوا جزء من قصة القيامة.

يوسف الرامي… هل يعرف أحد أي شيء عنه؟

إليك قائمة بالعشرة صفات الأوائل الخاصة بي:

1. عضو بارز في السنهدرين، الهيئة الحاكمة لأمة إسرائيل.
2. جيد ومستقيم
3. لم يوافق على قتل السيد المسيح .
4. في انتظار ملكوت الله
5. غَنيّ
6. طلب وبجرأة من بيلاطس جسد السيد المسيح
7. وضع الجسد في قبر حديقته الجديد بمساعدة نيقوديموس. تأكد من أن الحجر أغلق القبر.
8. قدم الأكفان و75 رطلا من الحنوط باهظ الثمن.
9. يخشى اليهود.
10. تابع سري ليسوع. هل هذا تناقض؟

أتعجب كيف يمكن لمتابع سري أن يخرج فجأة من الظلال ولا يزال يتم الحديث عنه حتى يومنا هذا. من الناحية اللاهوتية، فعل شيئا استراتيجيا للغاية. إيماننا المسيحي مبني على موت السيد المسيح ودفنه وقيامته (1 كورنثوس. 15:1-4). يحظى الصليب والقبر الفارغ بكل الاهتمام، ولكن غالبا ما يتم تجاهل الدفن. لن نفعل ذلك اليوم.

من السهل دائما افتراض أن الأجساد دفنت في مكان ما. مستحيل. عادة ما يتم إنزال المجرمين المصلوبين من الصلبان وإلقائهم في مقلب القمامة ليؤكلوا بواسطة الحيوانات والنسور. بدون يوسف، لا يوجد جسد للقيامة. لا يوجد قبر فارغ. بدون يوسف الرامي ، لما كان هناك تحقيق للوعد المسياني  لدفن المسيح في قبر رجل غني لك يا يوسف.   ( أشعياء ٥٣ : ٩ )

يوسف أيضا مثال جيد عن عدم فوات الأوان بعد للخروج و لإحداث فرق كبير. لم يكن لديه أي فكرة أنه كان يقرض القبر فقط. هل فكرت يوما في مدى حب يسوع لاستخدام الأشياء المقترضة؟ لقد استخدم سمك للتغذية مستعار. استخدم قاربا مستعارا…. عملة معدنية… قارب… صندوق غداء… حمار… حديقة… غرفة علوية واستخدم قبرا مستعارا لمدة ثلاثة أيام. هل لديك أي شيء يمكنك السماح ليسوع باستعارته اليوم؟

ربما كان يوسف تلميذا خفيا لفترة من الوقت ولكن عندما جاء وقت الأزمة، كان التلاميذ المعروفون يختبئون بينما كان يصنع تاريخ الملكوت . يقول المثل القديم: “المسيحيون مثل أكياس الشاي، أنت لا تعرف حقا ما بداخلها حتى يتم وضعها في الماء الساخن”. من أنا ل لأكشف عن تلميذا خفي إذا لم يفعل الله ذلك؟ أنت لا تعرف أبدا متى ينتقل شخص ما من الخوف إلى الإيمان … من جبان إلى شجاع.

٤ مجموعات دعم فقدان شخص غالي عليك

بينما نتبنى حكمة رومية 12:15، “فرحا مع الفرحين بكائا مع الباكين”، نعلن عن مبادرة جديدة مكرسة لدعمك في أوقات الحزن

نقدم برنامج دعم مدته 8 أسابيع، مصمم لدعم أولئك الذين يتألمون بسبب فقدان أحد أفراد أسرتهم من خلال رحلتهم على الأرض.

بنعمة ربنا، سنستضيف مجموعتين كل أسبوع، مما يوفر مساحة للترحيب بالجميع للانضمام إما إلى مجموعات الاثنين أو الخميس (وليس كليهما). تبدأ مجموعة الإثنين الأولى يوم الاثنين 12/5.

يُرجى الانتباه إلى الإرشادات التالية عند ركن سيارتك ومراعاة الجيران

عدم الركن في  Broe Avenue: يُرجى الحرص على عدم ركن السيارات في Broe Avenue مما يسبب اختناق مروري وهو أمر خطير.
