Beloved ones,

Each week during the Holy 50 days, servants from St Mark will highlight the spirituality of one of the saints who were part of the story of the Resurrection.

Nicodemus: The Secret Disciple

There’s an interesting story about a healing that occurs in Mark 8 that often gets overlooked in the Gospels. It is the healing of a blind man and it gets little mention due to both its briefness and the fact that there is a more remarkable story of a blind man told later in the Gospel of John.

The story follows a blind man in the city of Bethsaida that came into contact with Christ, of Whom it states:

And when He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him if he saw anything. And he looked up and said, “I see men like trees, walking.” Then He put His hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly. (Mark 8:23-25)

Since when did Christ need to perform a miracle twice in order to enact healing?

He did this to show that healing comes in stages. And this is no truer than in the life of Nicodemus, a Pharisee who first enters into a relationship with Christ “at night” (Jn 3:2) for fear that he would be removed from his place in the Sanhedrin. He kept this relationship hidden and only very subtly came to his defence before the Pharisees, questioning whether the Law condemned a man before hearing him (Jn 7:50-52) as they plotted to arrest Him.

Following the Crucifixion, Nicodemus finally steps fully into the light in John 19:39: “Nicodemus, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds in weight.”

This was an extravagant, public act of love—impossible to conceal.

Of this, Gregory the Great writes: “He came at night to the Light of the world, hiding his faith in secret, yet he was drawn by truth; and in time, truth conquered his fear.”

Just as the blind man, the healing of Nicodemus came in stages, and so often the case, so does ours. From the initial curiosity, to cautious defence, to open devotion; the question must be asked: where do I stand today in my relationship with Christ?

As we embrace the wisdom of Romans 12:15, “Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep,” we are excited to unveil a new initiative designed to support you in times of loss.

Introducing an 8-week support program, crafted to guide those mourning the loss of a loved one through their journey on earth.

With the Grace of God, we will host two groups each week, offering a welcoming space for all to join either the Monday or the Thursday groups (not both).

Updated start date: Monday Group 1 will now commence Monday 21 July.

Thursday Group 2 start-date (unchanged): Thursday 29 May

5. Lion’s Den Australia

Lion’s Den Australia is a Coptic-founded, community-focused initiative that began at St. Mark’s Church and has since grown to include men from all churches and the broader community.

It’s a safe space where men can gather, talk, and grow together.

While rooted in faith, Lion’s Den serves all men—offering programs that build skills, promote health, and strengthen wellbeing.

The focus is on connection, support, and breaking the stigma around men’s mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

9. Parking Guidelines –

Please take care of our neighbours

Please take note of the following guidelines when parking your car and take care of our neighbours:

Avoid Parking Near Driveways or Corners: Always ensure that your vehicle does not block any driveways and that you avoid parking too close to corners, which can obstruct the view for other drivers and pedestrians.

Quiet Arrival and Departure: Please be as quiet as possible when arriving and leaving in your vehicles. This consideration will help maintain the tranquillity of our neighbourhood.

No Parking on Broe Avenue: Please observe the specific rule of not parking along Broe Avenue as this creates a traffic bottleneck which is dangerous.

Respect Neighbours’ Reserved Spots: Some neighbours may place bins or other markers to reserve parking spots for their households. Out of respect for their needs and requests, please do not move these markers or park in these reserved spots.

١.الرسالة الروحية الأسبوعية

ايها الأحباء،

كل اسبوع خلال الخمسين المقدسة، سيلقي خدام القديس مارمرقس الضوء على روحانية أحد القديسين الذين كانوا جزء من قصة القيامة.

نيقوديموس: تلميذ في السر

هناك قصة شيقة عن قصة شفاء حدثت في إنجيل مرقس الإصحاح الثامن، وكثيرًا ما تُغفل عنها في الأناجيل. إنها قصة شفاء رجل أعمى، ونادرًا ما تُذكر لقصرها ولوجود قصة أكثر جذباً للانتباه عن رجل أعمى رُويت بعد ذلك في إنجيل يوحنا.

تحكي القصة عن رجل أعمى في مدينة بيت صيدا التقى بالسيد المسيح، حيث ورد ما يلي:

وَتَفَلَ فِي عَيْنَيْهِ، وَوَضَعَ يَدَيْهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَأَلَهُ: هَلْ أَبْصَرَ شَيْئًا؟

 فَتَطَلَّعَ وَقَالَ: «أُبْصِرُ النَّاسَ كَأَشْجَارٍ يَمْشُونَ».

 ثُمَّ وَضَعَ يَدَيْهِ أَيْضًا عَلَى عَيْنَيْهِ، وَجَعَلَهُ يَتَطَلَّعُ. فَعَادَ صَحِيحًا وَأَبْصَرَ كُلَّ إِنْسَانٍ جَلِيًّا.(مرقس 8: 23 -25)

منذ متى احتاج السيد المسيح إلى إجراء معجزة مرتين ليُحقق الشفاء؟

فعل ذلك ليُظهر أن الشفاء يأتي على مراحل. وهذا أصدق ما يكون في حياة نيقوديموس، الفريسي الذي دخل في علاقة مع المسيح “ليلاً” (يوحنا 3: 2) خوفاً من أن يُعزل من مجلس السنهدريم. أخفى هذه العلاقة، ودافع عن السيد المسيح أمام الفريسيين بطريقة غير ملحوظة، متسائلاً عما إذا كان الناموس يدين رجلاً قبل سماعه (يوحنا 7: 50-52) وهم يُدبّرون ​​مؤامرة لاعتقاله.

بعد الصلب، تقدم نيقوديموس أخيراً إلى النور بصورة واضحة يوحنا 19: 39:

وَجَاءَ أَيْضًا نِيقُودِيمُوسُ، الَّذِي أَتَى أَوَّلًا إِلَى يَسُوعَ لَيْلًا، وَهُوَ حَامِلٌ مَزِيجَ مُرّ وَعُودٍ نَحْوَ مِئَةِ مَنًا.

كان هذا عملاً باهظ الثمن وعملاً علنياً عن المحبة، يستحيل إخفاؤه. وعن هذا، يكتب القديس غريغوريوس الكبير:

“جاء ليلاً إلى نور العالم، مُخفياً إيمانه سراً، ومع ذلك انجذب إلى الحق؛ ومع مرور الوقت، غلب الحق خوفه.”

كما حدث مع الأعمى، جاء شفاء نيقوديموس على مراحل، وكثيرًا ما يكون كذلك الأمر معنا

من الفضول الأولي، إلى الدفاع الحذر، إلى التفاني الصريح؛ لا بد من طرح السؤال: أين أنا اليوم في علاقتي بالسيد المسيح؟

نقدم برنامج دعم مدته 8 أسابيع، مصمم لدعم أولئك الذين يتألمون بسبب فقدان أحد أفراد أسرتهم من خلال رحلتهم على الأرض

بنعمة ربنا، سنستضيف مجموعتين كل أسبوع، مما يوفر مساحة للترحيب بالجميع للانضمام إما إلى مجموعات الاثنين أو الخميس (وليس كليهما).
