1.Weekly Spiritual Message
Spiritual message of the week by Father Elijah:
This Saturday we celebrate the feast of Epiphany. One of the sweetest phrases of the gospel of the feast is when St John says to the Pharisees: “It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.” John 1:27 NKJV
In this verse we see St John the Baptist’s humility and his awareness of who he is and who Christ is. St Gregory the Great also observes that it was no coincidence that a sandal was mentioned. He says:
“It was a custom among the ancients that if someone was unwilling to take the wife he should be taking, he who should have come to her as bridegroom by right of relationship would undo his sandal. How did Christ appear among men and women if not as the bridegroom of his holy church? John said of him that “he who has the bride is the bridegroom.” Since people considered John the Christ, a fact that he denied, he was right to declare his unworthiness to undo the strap of Christ’s sandal. It is as if he was saying, “I am not able to lay bare the footsteps of the Redeemer, because I am not unrightfully usurping for myself the name of bridegroom.”
St John the Baptist, by refusing to untie the sandal of Christ, refused to take the place of Christ. When we judge others, we wrongfully take the place of Christ. When we take credit for our achievements, we wrongly take the place of Christ. When we consider ourselves superior to others, we wrongly take the place of Christ.
Let us refuse to loose the sandal strap of Jesus this Epiphany. Blessed feast!
2. Feast of the Epiphany Services – Tonight Friday 19 January
Two services will be prayed – in the Arabic and English churches.
Lakan prayers will start at 7:30pm and will be followed by liturgies on Friday night.
Please note, there will be no liturgies prayed on Saturday (20 Jan) morning.
A blessed Epiphany feast to all.
3. HSC Mathematics Advanced (2U) comprehensive course
HSC Mathematics Advanced (2U) comprehensive course starting 28th January. 12:00pm to 2:00pm Tutor is Mr. Tamer Henry who has intensive experience in tutoring HSC Maths subjects.
The course will include:
•compulsory homework.

4. School of Academic Excellence – Term 1 2024
Primary and Secondary Tutoring: St Marks Church ‘School of Academic Excellence’ is available every Friday night from 6:30pm to 7:30pm covering literacy, maths and General ability. 5. Come and Learn – updated posters!
St Mark Church Christian Studies Centre announces the courses for 2024. We especially encourage the youth to start learning Arabic to be more capable to listen to Arabic sermons, read spiritual books and communicate with families in Egypt. Many more other courses are available in Arabic and English. You can also enrol and study online.

9. Bereavement Announcement of beloved George Soliman, Demiana Samy and Antoun George:
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." II Timothy 4:7
Our beloved George Soliman and his wife Demiana Samy and their son Antoun George have all peacefully departed to Heaven into the arms of our Lord after a tragic accident.
George is the Younger brother of Samir Megalla and his Wife Randa Kelada and Uncle of Sameh and Steven Megalla and Brother of Abona El Raheb El Qomos Athanasious Elnaqloni.
Condolences will be received at St Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church, Arncliffe on Tuesday 23rd January in the Church Hall 7pm – 9pm.
10. Bereavement Announcement of beloved Simona Louis
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." II Timothy 4:7
Our beloved Simona Louis has peacefully departed to Heaven into the arms of our Lord.
Simona is the wife of Samir Saad. She is the mother of Dr Beshoy and Sara Meshrakey and grandmother to John and Julie Abdelmesih, Filopateer, Bavley and Mark Beshoy and sister of nun Sefirneky at St George Monastery.
The family will receive condolences at St Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church, Arncliffe on Saturday 20th January in the Church Hall 7pm – 9pm.

١.الرسالة الروحية الأسبوعية
يقدم رسالة هذا الأسبوع قدس ابونا إيلايجا
نحتفل هذا السبت بعيد الظهور الإلهي (عيد الغطاس). من أجمل العبارات في الكتاب المقدس عن هذا العيد هي التي قالها القديس يوحنا للفريسيين : "هو الذي يأتي بعدي الذي صار قدامي الذي لست بمستحق أن أحل سيور حذائه" يوحنا 1:27
في هذه الآية نرى تواضع القديس يوحنا المعمدان وإدراكه لمن هو ومن هو السيد المسيح. ويشير القديس غريغوريوس الكبير أيضًا إلى أنه لم يكن من قبيل الصدفة ذكر الحذاء. هو يقول:
"وكانت عادة بين القدماء أنه إذا كان أحد لا يريد أن يأخذ المرأة التي يجب عليه أن يتزوجها بحق القرابة التي بينهما زوجة له، كان عليه أن يحل سيور حذاءه. فكيف ظهر السيد المسيح بين الرجال والنساء إن لم يكن كعريس لكنيسته المقدسة؟ وقال عنه يوحنا: "من له العروس فهو العريس". وبما أن الناس اعتبروا يوحنا هو المسيح، حقيقة هو أنكرها، فقد كان له الحق في إعلان عدم استحقاقه لفك سيور حذاء السيد المسيح. وكأنه يقول: "لست قادرًا على تعرية خطى الفادي، لأني لا اغتصب لنفسي اسم العريس بدون استحقاق".
القديس يوحنا المعمدان، برفضه فك سيور حذاء السيد المسيح، رفض أن يأخذ مكان السيد المسيح. عندما ندين الآخرين، فإننا نأخذ بشكل خاطئ مكان السيد المسيح. عندما ننسب فضل إنجازاتنا لأنفسنا، فإننا نخطئ ونأخذ مكان السيد المسيح. عندما نعتبر أنفسنا أفضل من الآخرين، فإننا نخطئ ونأخذ مكان السيد المسيح.
دعونا نرفض أن نفك سيور حذاء يسوع في عيد الغطاس هذا. كل عيد غطاس وانتم بخير!

سيُقام قداسين – في الكنيستين العربي والإنجليزي.
سيبدأ اللقان الساعة 7:30 مساء يوم الجمعة ثم القداس
لن تقام قداسات صباح يوم السبت 20 يناير
كل عيد ظهور إلهي وانتم جميعاً بخير
٣. كورس شامل في مادة الرياضيات المتقدمة للثانوية العامة (2U)
يبدأ الكورس يوم 28 يناير من 12 – 2 ظهراً مع الاستاذ تامر هنري الذي لديه خبرة مكثفة في تدريس فروع مادة الرياضيات.

جورج هو الأخ الأصغر للخادم سمير مجلع – زوج راندا قلادة، وعم سامح وستيفن مجلع، وأخو ابينا الراهب القمص أثناسيوس النقلوني.
