Spiritual message of the week by Father Yacoub:
How should I react when someone praises me?
Praise is very effective under two circumstances. The first circumstance is when I have low self-esteem, and the second circumstance is when I am praised by someone in a high position.
Let us learn from St Mary. She was suffering in poverty, and as a teenager, all she did was serve as a maidservant in the temple, she was robbed from having a mother and father because she was an orphan. She was given to an old poor man living in a disreputable village called Nazareth in a disreputable district called Galilee.
Regarding the second circumstance, St Mary was praised by St Elizabeth, a very reputable priest’s wife. How did she react to the praise that she received from St Elizabeth? She shifted the praise from herself to God. She changed the personal praise to a divine doxology.
If I say “I do not deserve this praise” I may feel as though I am gaining the virtue of humility. But if I give glory to God, I forget about myself, I benefit myself and I benefit the person that is praising me. She said “My soul magnifies the Lord… For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant” (Luke 1:46-48). She praised God for His mercy upon the needy and despised.
Lord, please teach me to shift focus from myself to Your glory. Amen.
2. New Year’s Eve Services
Happy New Year to our beautiful family at St Mark.
NYE Arabic Service: Sunday 31 December: 7:30 – 10:30pm
Service in the Arabic Church includes talks from the Fathers, tasbeha and skit, followed by the holy liturgy.
NYE English Service: Sunday 31 December: 7:30pm – Midnight

3. Christmas Eve – Saturday 6 January
5:30-7:30pm: Early liturgy services for families with little kids and elderly people in English church and St Wanas church.
8:00 – 10:30pm: Late liturgies in Arabic church and English church.

4. Saturday Kiahk Praises 7&4
The beautiful Kiahk Praises are on this Saturday 23 December:
Vesper: 6:30pm followed by Tasbeha
Mass: 11pm
A blessed feast for all.
5. Liturgies until the end of the Nativity Fasting
Daily: 5 – 7am and 8:30 – 10am
Late liturgies: Wednesdays and Fridays 1 – 2:30pm

١.الرسالة الروحية الأسبوعية
يقدم رسالة هذا الأسبوع قدس ابونا يعقوب
كيف استجيب عندما يمتدحنى شخص ما؟
إن المديح له فعالية كبيرة جداً في حالتين. الحالة الأولى عندما أعاني من صغر نفس ، والحالة الثانية عندما يمتدحني شخص ذو منصب مرموق.
فنتعلم من السيدة العذراء القديسة مريم. فهي كانت تعاني من الفقر وفي سن المراهقة عملت كخادمة في الهيكل، حُرمت من الأب والأم لأنها كانت يتيمة. ثم تم إعطائها لرجل مسن وفقير يعيش في قرية سيئة السمعة تُدعى الناصرة في منطقة الجليل.
بالنسبة للحالة الثانية، فقد قامت القديسة إليصابات زوجة الكاهن المعروف بمدح القديسة مريم، فكيف تعاملت السيدة العذراء مع هذا المديح؟ لقد حولت المديح إلى الله، فقد حولت المديح الشخصي إلى ذكصولوجية إلهية.
إذا قلت “أنا لا استحق المديح” قد اشعر أنني قد حصلت على فضيلة التواضع ولكن إذا اعطيت المجد لله، فقد نسيت ذاتي لأنفع نفسي والشخص الذي يمتدحني. قالت السيدة العذراء ” فلتعظم نفسي الرب …. لأنه نظر إلى اتضاع امته” (لوقا 1: 46-48).
لقد مجدت الله لعظيم رحمته على المعوز والمذدرى.
يارب علمني ان انقل التركيز من ذاتي إلى التركيز عليك آمين.
