1. Weekly Spiritual Message
Spiritual message of the week by Father Elijah:
One of the greatest burdens a person can carry is a lack of forgiveness. We may feel that the person who has wronged me does not deserve forgiveness and wait for them to take the first step. However, lack of forgiveness closes the door to blessing. In many Orthodox churches, a ritual of forgiveness takes place before the Lent as we cannot enjoy the riches of the fast when carrying the burden of animosity. In the Liturgy, we seek to be reconciled with our neighbour before seeking reconciliation with God when we exchange a holy kiss. This is in keeping with the Lord’s command: “therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” Matt 5: 23-24.
In Antioch, in the first centuries of Christianity, there lived two friends, Sapricius (who was a priest) and Nicephorus. They enjoyed a very close friendship until a dispute arose and their friendship turned into bitter hatred. Eventually, Nicephorus sought to be reconciled with his friend, Fr Sapricius. During this time, a persecution arose against the Christians in Antioch and Fr Sapricius was arrested and brought before the governor. He confessed his faith in Christ and endured all kinds of torture. This disturbed Nicephorus and he rushed to the prison to receive the blessing of his friend and seek reconciliation. How could he not be willing to forgive such a righteous person – a martyr no less!
Nicephorus was able to reach the place of execution and begged Fr Sapricius for forgiveness. The priest did not reply, his heart full of malice. Nicephorus persisted to the very last opportunity but the priest remained unforgiving. The grace of God then left the priest and when the executioners were about to behead him, he decided to worship the idols. His friend Nicephorus implored him with tears not to miss out on his crown at this final instant. Fr Sapricius paid no attention, and when the executioners saw Nicephorus’ faith and boldness, they martyred him in the place of his friend. Because of a lack of forgiveness, Fr Sapricius missed out on the blessing of martyrdom. What blessing am I missing out on this Lent because of a lack of forgiveness? Let’s forgive!

4. Special revival during Lent in Monday Arabic Bible Study meeting
HG Bishop Daniel will give a talk in the Arabic Bible Study meeting this Monday 6 March at 7pm. Come to have the blessing of praising, listing to the Word of God and HG presence in our church.

We’re delighted to be back this year with our Sunday school parents meet and greet where you get the opportunity to meet parents from your children’s Sunday school class.

7. Servants’ Retreat 2023

St Marks church offers a wide range of kids activities during the term. This is a great way for your child to build on their skills within the church environment. Please see attached flyer for more details. Please contact services coordinators for more information.

يقدم رسالة هذا الأسبوع قدس أبونا إيلايجا
من أعظم الأعباء التي يمكن أن يحملها الإنسان هو عبء عدم المغفرة. قد نشعر أن الشخص الذي ظلمني لا يستحق المغفرة وننتظر منه اتخاذ الخطوة الأولى. ولكن، عدم المغفرة يغلق باب البركة. في العديد من الكنائس الأرثوذكسية، تجري طقوس الغفران قبل الصوم الكبير حيث لا يمكننا الاستمتاع بثروات الصوم ونحن نحمل عبء العداوة. وفي القداس، عندما نتبادل القبلة المقدسة نحن نسعى إلى الصلح مع من يجلس بالقرب منا قبل أن نسعى إلى الصلح مع الله. هذا تمشيا مع أمر الرب: فإن قدمت قربانك إلى المذبح وهناك تذكرت أن لأخيك شيئا عليك: اترك هناك قربانك قدام المذبح واذهب أولا اصطلح مع أخيك وحينئذ تعال وقدم قربانك: متى ٥: ٢٣-٢٤
في أنطاكية، في القرون الأولى للمسيحية، عاش صديقان سابريكيوس (الذي كان كاهنًا) ونيسفوروس.
تمتعا بصداقة حميمة حتى نشأ الخلاف وتحولت صداقتهما إلى كراهية مريرة. ثم سعى نيسفوروس للتصالح مع صديقه الأب سابريكيوس. خلال هذا الوقت، نشأ اضطهاد ضد المسيحيين في أنطاكية وتم القبض على الأب سابريكوس وتقديمه للمحاكمة. اعترف بإيمانه بالسيد المسيح وتحمل كل أنواع العذاب. أزعج هذا الأمر نيسفوروس، فاندفع إلى السجن لينال بركة صديقه ويطلب الصلح. فكيف لا يكون على استعداد أن يغفر لمثل هذا الصالح – الشهيد!
استطاع نيسفوروس الوصول إلى مكان الإعدام وتوسل الأب سابريكيوس للمغفرة. لم يرد الكاهن عليه، فكان قلبه مملوء بالكراهية. أصر نيسفوروس حتى آخر لحظة، لكن الكاهن ظل لا يرحم. ثم تركت نعمة الله الكاهن وعندما كان السيّاف على وشك قطع رأسه قرر أن يعبد الأصنام. ناشده صديقه نيسفوروس بدموع ألا يخسر اكليله في هذه اللحظة الأخيرة. لم ينتبه الأب سابريكيوس، وعندما رأى السيّاف إيمان نيسفوروس وجرأته قتله هو بدل من صديقه واستشهد.
بسبب عدم التسامح، فقد الأب سابريكيوس نعمة الاستشهاد.
تُرى ما هي البركة التي أفقدها في هذا الصوم الكبير بسبب عدم التسامح؟ فلنسامح!!
