Category: Pauline Epistle (New Testament Book)

Written by: St Paul

Written for:* The Church at Colosse, which is in modern day Turkey. The city of Colosse had been preached to by Epaphras, a Christian who had met and been converted by Paul.

At the time of: St Paul’s imprisonment in Rome, between 61-63 AD

Main Focus: The book of Colossians focuses strongly on Christ. In Colossians, we see Christ is the Head of the Church and He is all in all. Loosely, the first half of the book shows Christ is the Head of the Church, and Paul shows us who He is. Then in the second half Paul shows us that Christ is our life and shows how He enters and works in our lives

St Paul also sought to address a heresy that had started to spread in Colosse. He sought to defend against Gnosticism, which valued knowledge highly. People who followed gnosticism considered any physical material to be sinful. And so they could not comprehend that Jesus who came as a human, could possibly be God. People also began to deny that Christ on the Cross was God, and started to say that His Spirit left Jesus on the Cross, leaving just a man to die on the Cross. This heresy started to spread in Colosse, which is why Paul had to address this incorrect belief.

A Key Verse: If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Col 3:1
