‘Kyrie-eleison’ during Lent

You may notice that, especially during Lenten Liturgies, priests love to chant the sweet part ‘Je-nainan’ or ‘Have mercy’ or ‘Kyrie-eleison’.  This is not that the prayer is a right, or a necessity, but it arises naturally from the fathers, as it is befitting during Lent that we feel humble and repentant, begging for God’s mercy more than any other time of the year.

The components of this prayer are:

1. ‘God the Father, have mercy on us’: We beg the Almighty Father to protect us from Satan, and all the tribulations in the world.
2. ‘God the Son, have mercy on us’: We beg Jesus for salvation, and to grant us to appear righteous in front of the Father through Jesus’ Body and Blood.
3. ‘God have mercy, and have mercy’: This is intended to establish a feeling of mercy in our hearts, through the continuous work of the Holy Spirit in us.

Let us meaningfully chant with Abouna this prayer daily in the Mass throughout Lent, until we reach Good Friday with hearts ready to taste the beauty of 400 Kyrie-eleisons, begging God to shower us with His mercy.

As we begin Lent, we’re encouraging a Phone Swap / Phone Detox as a meaningful way to quiet distractions and create more room for prayer, reflection, and a deeper relationship with God – something that can be embraced at any age.

Lent calls us to grow in self-discipline and refocus our hearts on what truly matters.

Stepping back from phone use can be a powerful and intentional part of the fast.

Join us for a Men’s Fruit Picking Day – a chance to swap the desk for the orchard, enjoy God’s creation, and compete (just a little) over who can pick the best harvest.

9. Obstructing our Neighbours

Dear Congregation,

Particularly during the sacred time of Lent, we kindly ask everyone to be mindful of our neighbours by ensuring their driveways remain unobstructed at all times.

If you realise your vehicle is blocking a driveway, please make it a priority to move it to a more suitable location. This simple act of courtesy helps foster positive relationships with our neighbours and reflects our commitment to being respectful and responsible members of the community.

Unfortunately, we have received increasing concerns from our neighbouring friends about driveways being blocked by St. Mark’s parish members.

As followers of Christ, we are called to show love, respect and consideration to all — our neighbours, our community, and the shared environment we cherish.

Your cooperation in this matter is not only appreciated but essential in upholding the values we strive to live by.

10. Bereavement Announcement for beloved Nadia Zaki

Nadia Zaki was the wife of the late Samir Takla. She is the mother of Heba and Haidy Takla, and the mother-in-law of Samuel Fawzy and Magdy Shenoda. She is the grandmother of (Marina, Kyrillos and Bishoy Samuel) and the grandmother of (Kyrillos and Mariam Shenoda).

Condolences will be accepted at Vesper Prayers from 7pm on Saturday 21 February at St Mark’s Church.

١. الرسالة الروحية الأسبوعية

يقدم رسالة هذا الأسبوع قدس ابونا جوناثان

«كيريا لايسون» خلال الصوم الكبير

قد تلاحظون أنه، خصوصًا خلال صلوات الصوم الكبير، يحب الكهنة ترتيل الجزء العذب «جي ناينان» أو «يا رب ارحم» أو «كيريا لايسون». وليس ذلك لأن هذه الصلاة حقٌّ أو واجبٌ مفروض، بل لأنها تنبع طبيعيًا من الآباء، إذ يليق بنا في زمن الصوم أن نشعر بالتواضع والندامة، وأن نتوسل إلى رحمة الله أكثر من أي وقت آخر في السنة.

مكوّنات هذه الصلاة هي:

1. «الله الآب ارحمنا»: نتوسل إلى الآب القدير أن يحمينا من الشيطان ومن جميع تجارب العالم.
2. «الله الابن ارحمنا»: نتوسل إلى يسوع من أجل الخلاص، وأن يمنحنا أن نقف أبرارًا أمام الآب من خلال جسد يسوع ودمه.
3. «يا الله ارحم، ارحم»: والمقصود منها أن يترسخ شعور الرحمة في قلوبنا، من خلال عمل الروح القدس المستمر فينا.

فلنرتل مع أبونا هذه الصلاة يوميًا بوعيٍ وخشوع في القداس طوال فترة الصوم، حتى نبلغ الجمعة العظيمة بقلوبٍ مستعدة لتذوق جمال الأربعمائة «كيريا لايسون»، متوسلين إلى الله أن يفيض علينا من رحمته.

استمتعوا بروحانية الصوم.

٢. البرنامج الروحي خلال  الصوم الكبير

1. القداسات: يوميًا من 5–7 صباحًا ومن 8:30–10:30 صباحًا.

بالإضافة إلى ما سبق، يومي الأربعاء والجمعة من 1–3 ظهرًا قداس، ويوم الخميس من 5–7 مساءً.

2. عشية يوم السبت واجتماع روحي يحضره جميع الآباء، يعقبه أغابي يُقدَّم من الآباء. موضوع الاجتماع الروحي يوم السبت هو صلاة الرب “أبانا الذي في السماوات”.
3. فرصة لزيارة الكنيسة كل ليلة خلال الصوم الكبير:

الاثنين: اجتماع دراسة الكتاب المقدس (عربي وإنجليزي) الساعة 7 مساءً.

الثلاثاء: تسبحة الساعة 8:30 مساءً.

الأربعاء: اجتماع صلوات وترانيم الساعة 7 مساءً (بالكنيسة العربية).

الخميس: تسبحة الساعة 9:30 مساءً.

مساء الجمعة: اجتماع الشباب (إنجليزي) واجتماع الأسرة (عربي).

4. عظة يومية خلال قداس 8:30 صباحًا، تتناول موضوعًا مختلفًا كل أسبوع. سيتم إعلامكم بموضوع الأسبوع كل يوم اثنين.
5. الاعترافات: الأربعاء مساءً الساعة 7 مساءً، والأحد بعد القداس، وأوقات أخرى يتم ترتيبها مع الآباء.
6. صلاوات القنديل: الآباء يحبون زيارتكم ومباركة بيوتكم بالصلوات. يرجى الاطلاع على الملصق أدناه لمزيد من التفاصيل.

خلال هذا الصوم، نشجّع على مبادرة استبدال الهاتف / الصوم الرقمي لأطفالنا، لمساعدتهم على الابتعاد عن الملاهي الرقمية وإتاحة مساحة أكبر للصلاة والتأمل والارتباط بالله.

تهدف هذه المبادرة إلى مساعدة الأطفال على تنمية ضبط النفس والانتباه خلال فترة الصوم، من خلال تقليل الاعتماد على الهواتف الذكية قدر الإمكان.

إذا كنتم ترغبون في إرشاد حول كيفية تطبيق ذلك مع أطفالكم، يرجى عدم التردد في التحدث مع أب الاعتراف.

شعب الكنيسة الغالي،

نرجو وبالأخص خلال وقت الصوم الكبير المقدس، من الجميع الانتباه إلى جيراننا والتأكّد من عدم إعاقة مداخل منازلهم في أي وقت.

إذا لاحظتم أن سيارتكم تسدّ مدخل أحد البيوت، نرجو إعطاء الأولوية لنقلها إلى مكان مناسب. إن هذا التصرّف البسيط يعزّز علاقات طيبة مع جيراننا ويعبّر عن التزامنا بأن نكون أعضاء محترمين ومسؤولين في المجتمع.

للأسف، تلقّينا في الفترة الأخيرة شكاوى متزايدة من جيراننا بشأن إغلاق المداخل من قِبل بعض أفراد كنيسة مار مرقس.

بما أننا اتباع السيد المسيح، نحن مدعوون لإظهار المحبة والاحترام والعناية للجميع — لجيراننا، ولمجتمعنا، وللبيئة المشتركة التي نعتزّ بها.
