Contemplation (verse 13): “God does not choose people because of their birth, or their strength, or their works alone. He chooses them by grace, by promise, and because He sees what they will become. Jacob was chosen, not because he was better, but because God saw the future and made a plan for salvation. So do not be proud of your background, and do not be discouraged by your weakness. God sees your heart. What matters is not where you came from, but how you respond to His call.” (+ St John Chrysostom)
Personal Reflection: Jacob was chosen even before he did anything good or bad. What does that tell you about God’s knowledge of your heart and your future? How does that make you feel—hopeful, nervous, comforted?
Bible Knowledge Question: How does St. Paul use the example of Jacob and Esau to explain God’s choice?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for choosing me not because of who I am or what I’ve done, but because of Your love and mercy. Teach me to trust in Your promises, and not in my own strength. Help me respond to Your call with faith, like Jacob, not with pride or fear. Make me a true child of Your promise, living each day with humility, gratitude, and hope.
