Mission as a Direct Encounter with Christ

Every act of love and compassion in mission work is a direct service to Jesus Himself. When we feed the hungry, visit the sick, or comfort the lonely, we aren’t just helping people; we are serving Christ Himself.

Mission is not merely external; it is transformative. When we serve the needy, our hearts are purified, and our vision becomes clearer we appreciate what God has given us. We begin to see every person as sacred. This is why mission is also a spiritual discipline a kind of living prayer.

Matthew 25:35–39 profoundly shapes how we view mission work:

• When you feed a child, you see Christ.
• When you dress a wound, you touch Christ.
• When you listen to someone in sorrow, you hear Christ speaking.

You may not remember every face, but Christ remembers every act of love done in His name.

2. A Reflection on The
2025 Kenya Mission Experience

On June 30, 2025, 110 individuals from St. Mark’s Servants, youth, and students, with the blessing of Fr. Bishoy El-Antony and Fr. Joseph Ghattas, departed for a two-week mission experience in Kenya, Africa.

Upon arrival in Nairobi, Kenya, the mission began with a visit to the Kibera slums, where our group witnessed and experienced homes made of sheds in one of Kenya’s poorest areas. The following 12 days were dedicated to daily mission services. Highlights included a full day at a boys’ orphanage, starting with a Liturgy, followed by Sunday school activities and games. A medical campaign was also conducted, where 25 of our medical professionals examined most of the boys for various conditions, providing dental, podiatry, and pharmaceutical care.

From Nairobi, the group travelled to the Masai Mara wild animal reserve to see many of Africa’s wild animals and experience life in a Masai tribal village. The remainder of the time was spent at our Coptic Hospital compound in Maseno/Kisumu, where the Coptic Mission supports 35 churches in remote rural villages.

Daily, the group visited very poor villages where people live in mud huts, attending Coptic Liturgies and helping repair hut roofs. Three different medical campaigns were conducted in three different villages, where over 600 patients were seen. Prison visitations included three facilities: a women’s prison, a men’s minimum-security prison, and a men’s maximum-security prison with 2,500 inmates, including a life-sentence unit, where we baptised 27 inmates. The group also attended day meetings with widows, mothers, and schoolchildren.

Additionally, ten servants from the group travelled to the Salgaa Coptic church and compound to serve street girls. These girls are offered alternative work in a T-shirt factory, established to help them leave the streets and avoid a sinful environment.

While I was in the maximum security, life-sentence section of the prison, baptising 27 inmates with Abouna Bishoy, and with one of the Kenyan fathers, and two of our deacons, I received the above note from a prisoner named Hosea. How beautiful that the first thing this life-sentenced prisoner wished for, if he won his appeal, was for the Coptic Church mission to visit his home village and that he wants to build a Coptic church there. Our Coptic church has truly impacted the lives of many throughout the world.

الخدمة كلقاء مباشر مع المسيح

كل عمل محبة ورحمة في الخدمة الإرسالية هو خدمة مباشرة لشخص المسيح نفسه. عندما نطعم الجائع، أو نزور المريض، أو نواسي الوحيد، فإننا لا نساعد الناس فقط، بل نخدم المسيح نفسه.

الخدمة ليست مجرد عمل خارجي، بل هي عمل يغير الإنسان من الداخل. عندما نخدم المحتاجين، تتنقّى قلوبنا، وتصبح رؤيتنا أوضح، فنُقدّر عطايا الله لنا. ونبدأ في رؤية كل إنسان على أنه كائن مقدّس. ولهذا، تُعتبر الخدمة أيضًا انضباطًا روحيًا، ونوعًا من الصلاة الحية.

إن إنجيل متى ٣٥:٢٥–٣٩ يُشكّل رؤيتنا للخدمة الإرسالية بعمق:

*عندما تطعم طفلًا، فأنت ترى المسيح.

*عندما تضمد جرحًا، فأنت تلمس المسيح.

قد لا تتذكّر كل الوجوه، لكن المسيح يتذكّر كل عمل محبة تم باسمه.

تجربة الخدمة في كينيا

في ٣٠ يونيو ٢٠٢٥، انطلق ١١٠ فرداً من خدام كنيسة مارمرقس، من شباب وطلبة، إلى تجربة خدمية لمدة أسبوعين في كينيا، إفريقيا، برعاية ابونا بيشوي الأنطوني وابونا جوزيف غطاس.

عند الوصول إلى نيروبي، كينيا، بدأت الخدمة بزيارة لأحياء كيبيرا العشوائية ، حيث شهد الفريق مساكن من الصفيح في واحدة من أفقر مناطق كينيا. وتم تخصيص ال١٢ يوماً الى خدمات يومية. من أبرز المحطات: يوم كامل في دار أيتام للبنين بدأ بالقداس الإلهي، تلاه أنشطة مدارس الأحد وألعاب. كما تم تنفيذ حملة طبية، فقام ٢٥ من الأطباء المشاركين بالكشف على معظم الأطفال، مقدمين الرعاية الطبية والدوائية والعلاجية للأسنان والقدم.

من نيروبي، سافر الفريق إلى محمية ماساي مارا لمشاهدة الحيوانات البرية الإفريقية وزيارة قرية قبلية من شعب الماساي. ثم قضى الفريق بقية الوقت في مجمع المستشفى القبطي في ماسينو/كيسومو، حيث تدعم البعثة القبطية ٣٥ كنيسة في قرى ريفية نائية.

قام الفريق يوميًا بزيارة قرى فقيرة جدًا، يعيش أهلها في أكواخ طينية، وحضروا قداسات قبطية، وساعدوا في إصلاح أسقف الأكواخ. كما نُفّذت ثلاث حملات طبية في ثلاث قرى مختلفة، تم خلالها فحص أكثر من ٦٠٠ مريض. شملت الزيارات أيضًا ثلاثة سجون: سجنًا للنساء، وسجنًا للرجال ذو وسائل أمنية ضعيفة، وسجنًا مشدد الحراسة يضم ٢٥٠٠ سجين، من ضمنهم المحكوم عليهم بالسجن المؤبد، حيث قمنا بتعميد ٢٧ سجينًا. كما حضر الفريق لقاءات يومية مع الأرامل، والأمهات، وتلاميذ المدارس.

بالإضافة إلى ذلك، سافر عشرة خدام من الفريق إلى كنيسة ومجمع السلقا القبطي لخدمة الفتيات اللواتي كنّ يعشن في الشوارع. وتُقدَّم لهؤلاء الفتيات فرصة عمل بديلة في مصنع لتيشيرتات، تم إنشاؤه لمساعدتهن على ترك حياة الشوارع وتجنّب البيئات الخاطئة.

وأثناء وجودي في قسم السجن المشدد الحراسة والمحكومين بالمؤبد، قمت بتعميد ٢٧ سجينًا برفقة أبونا بشوي، وأحد الآباء الكينيين، واثنين من الشمامسة، استلمت الورقة أعلاه من أحد السجناء ويدعى “هوشع”. ما أروع أن تكون أول أمنية لهذا السجين المحكوم بالمؤبد، إذا كسب استئنافه، هي أن تزور بعثة الكنيسة القبطية قريته، وأنه يرغب في بناء كنيسة قبطية هناك. إن كنيستنا القبطية قد أثّرت بالفعل في حياة الكثيرين حول العالم.

لأَنِّي جُعْتُ فَأَطْعَمْتُمُونِي. عَطِشْتُ فَسَقَيْتُمُونِي. كُنْتُ غَرِيبًا فَآوَيْتُمُونِي. عُرْيَانًا فَكَسَوْتُمُونِي. مَرِيضًا فَزُرْتُمُونِي. مَحْبُوسًا فَأَتَيْتُمْ إِلَيَّ. فَيُجِيبُهُ الأَبْرَارُ حِينَئِذٍ قَائِلِينَ: يَا رَبُّ، مَتَى رَأَيْنَاكَ جَائِعًا فَأَطْعَمْنَاكَ، أَوْ عَطْشَانًا فَسَقَيْنَاكَ؟ وَمَتَى رَأَيْنَاكَ غَرِيبًا فَآوَيْنَاكَ، أَوْ عُرْيَانًا فَكَسَوْنَاكَ؟ وَمَتَى رَأَيْنَاكَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ مَحْبُوسًا فَأَتَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ؟ فَيُجِيبُ الْمَلِكُ وَيَقوُل لَهُمْ: الْحَقَّ أَقُولُ لَكُمْ: بِمَا أَنَّكُمْ فَعَلْتُمُوهُ بِأَحَدِ إِخْوَتِي هؤُلاَءِ الأَصَاغِرِ، فَبِي فَعَلْتُمْ.” (مت 25: 35-40).
