When Prayer Feels Dry

 

Many of us begin Lent with good intentions to pray more. But after some time, prayer can begin to feel dry. Our minds wander, the words feel repetitive, and we may even begin to wonder whether our prayer is helping at all.

 

The Church Fathers remind us that this experience is very normal.

St. John Climacus writes: “Even if your prayer is distracted, do not give up. Stand patiently before God, and your perseverance will be counted as prayer.”

 

In fact, some of the most valuable prayers are the ones that feel the hardest. When prayer feels easy, we often pray because it feels good. But when prayer feels dry, we pray out of faith.

 

The Fathers give us simple and practical advice:

• Keep prayer simple — even repeating, “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.”
• Pray consistently, even if only for a few minutes each day.
• Gently return when your mind wanders — every return is itself an offering to God.
• Do not chase feelings — prayer is about being in Gods presence regardless of how i “feel”.

Lent teaches us to remain with God even when prayer feels quiet or difficult. And often it is in that quiet perseverance that the deepest spiritual growth takes place.

 

Now as we approach the halfway point of Great Lent, we pray that the Lord will help us make the second half of the fast even more fruitful than the first.

 

Lent is not about how we started — it is about how we finish.

 

Every day the Church gives us a new opportunity to return to God.

 

If I haven’t begun fasting properly, I begin today.

If I haven’t been praying regularly, I begin today.

If I haven’t gone to confession, I arrange it with my spiritual father today.

If there is someone I have not forgiven, I choose forgiveness today.

If distractions, laziness, or excuses have pulled me away from God and service, I turn back to Him and wash the feet of others around me today.

 

Lent always gives us this beautiful gift — the chance to begin again.

Not tomorrow.

Not next week.

Today.

 

Because if we are not going to take these steps during the holiest days of Lent, then we must honestly ask ourselves:

6:30 PM : Vespers, Glorification, Changing of Relics Spices, Short Talks, by church fathers

7:30 PM–9:00 PM : Heavenly Tasbeha by Candlelight

9:00 PM : Agape Meal, served by the church fathers, Gifts  & Cutting of the Cake

 

Come and share in this blessed evening as we celebrate the Saints of the Month together in joy, and fellowship.

3. Feast of the Cross
Wednesday 18 March 2026

Join us in celebrating the Feast of the Appearance of the Holy Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Time: 7:00 PM in the Arabic Church

Service in Arabic and English language

 

The evening will include:

• Vespers for the Feast of the Cross
• A Procession of the Holy Cross
• A Short Spiritual Reflection

Come and celebrate this blessed and glorious Feast of the Cross, remembering the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ through His life-giving Cross.

4. In the Shadow of the Cross

Saturday 3 April 2026

“And I entered into a covenant with you,” says the Lord God, “and you became Mine.” (Ezekiel 16:8)

 

As we reach the last Friday of the Fast, we find ourselves preparing for Holy Week and fixing our eyes on the Cross of Christ, just as Christ fixed His gaze on our salvation on the Cross.

 

Come and join us, as we remain with our Saviour “In the shadow of the Cross.”

 

On Friday 3/4/26 at 7:00 PM, we will gather for a spiritual evening titled “And I Entered Into a Covenant with You.” You are warmly invited to come and take part.

 

Children’s care service will begin at 7:00 PM.

 

Important Notes:

Parking: Please do not park on Broe Ave, in front of house driveways, or near street corners, as the council may issue fines for violations.

Noise: Kindly keep noise levels low, especially at night, out of respect for the neighbours. Thank you.

6. Church Nightly Lock Up Times

For the safety and comfort of everyone who calls our church home, please note our parish premises lock-up schedule:

• Sunday–Thursday: doors locked at 11:00 PM
• Friday–Saturday: doors locked at 11:30 PM

Kindly plan your activities so that all buildings and carparks are fully vacated before these times, as the property will be secured and inaccessible after hours.

١. الرسالة الروحية الأسبوعية

يقدم رسالة هذا الأسبوع – قدس ابونا ديفيد

عندما تبدو الصلاة جافة

يبدأ كثير منا الصوم الكبير بنوايا طيبة لنصلي أكثر. لكن بعد فترة قد تبدأ الصلاة بأن تبدو جافة. تتشتت أفكارنا، تبدو الكلمات مكررة، وقد نبدأ حتى في التساؤل إن كانت صلاتنا حقا   تفيد.

يذكّرنا آباء الكنيسة بأن هذه الخبرة أمر طبيعي جدًا.

يكتب القديس يوحنا الدرجي:

«حتى إن كانت صلاتك مشتتة، فلا تيأس. قف بصبر أمام الله، فمثابرتك تُحسب صلاة.»

في الحقيقة، بعض أثمن الصلوات هي تلك التي نشعر بأنها الأصعب. فعندما تكون الصلاة سهلة، غالبًا ما نصلي لأن ذلك يشعرنا بالراحة. أما عندما تكون الصلاة جافة، فإننا نصلي بدافع الإيمان.

ويقدم لنا الآباء نصائح بسيطة وعملية:

• اجعل الصلاة بسيطة — حتى لو بتكرار:

«يا رب يسوع المسيح، ابن الله، ارحمني أنا الخاطئ.»

• صلِّ باستمرار، حتى لو لبضع دقائق كل يوم.
• عندما يتشتت ذهنك، عُد بلطف إلى الصلاة — فكل عودة هي بحد ذاتها تقدمة لله.
• لا تبحث عن المشاعر — فالصلاة هي أن تكون في حضرة الله بغضّ النظر عمّا تشعر به.

يعلّمنا الصوم الكبير أن نبقى مع الله حتى عندما تبدو الصلاة هادئة أو صعبة. وغالبًا ما يكون في تلك المثابرة الهادئة أعمق نمو روحي.

والآن، بينما نقترب من منتصف الصوم الكبير، نصلي أن يساعدنا الرب لكي يكون النصف الثاني من الصوم أكثر ثمرًا من الأول.

فالصوم ليس عن كيف بدأناه— بل عن كيف ننهيه.

كل يوم تمنحنا الكنيسة فرصة جديدة لنعود إلى الله.

إن لم أكن قد بدأت الصوم كما ينبغي، فأنا أبدأ اليوم.

إن لم أكن أصلي بانتظام، فأنا أبدأ اليوم.

إن لم أذهب إلى الاعتراف، فأنا أرتب ذلك مع أبي الروحي اليوم.

إن كان هناك شخص لم أغفر له، فأنا أختار الغفران اليوم.

إن كانت الملهيات أو الكسل أو الأعذار قد أبعدتني عن الله وعن خدمة الآخرين، فأنا أعود إليه اليوم وأغسل أقدام من حولي.

الصوم يمنحنا دائمًا هذه العطية الجميلة — فرصة أن نبدأ من جديد.

ليس غدًا.

ليس الأسبوع القادم.

بل اليوم.

لأنه إن لم نتخذ هذه الخطوات خلال أقدس أيام الصوم، فعلينا أن نسأل أنفسنا بصدق:

برنامج الأمسية:

6:30 مساءً: صلاة عشية، تمجيد، تغيير الرفات، كلمات قصيرة من آباء الكنيسة.

7:30 – 9:00 مساءً: تسبحة سماوية على ضوء الشموع.

9:00 مساءً: وجبة محبة (أغابي)، يقدمها آباء الكنيسة، هدايا وتقطيع الكيك.

تعالوا وشاركونا في هذه الأمسية المباركة لنحتفل معًا بقديسي هذا الشهر بفرحٍ وشركةٍ روحية. ✨🙏

يرجى التأكد من الانتهاء من نشاطاتكم ومغادرة المباني ومواقف السيارات قبل هذه الأوقات، حيث سيتم إغلاق الكنيسة ولن يكون هناك أي دخول بعد ساعات الإغلاق.

ونوصل لآخر جمعه فى الصيام ونلاقى نفسنا بنرتب لأسبوع الآلام و نثبت أعينا لصليب المسيح كما ثبت المسيح نظره الى خلاصنا على الصليب هلم نخرج سويا ولو لبضع ساعات نمكث مع مخلصنا ” فى ظل الصليب ” يوم الجمعه ٣/ ٤ الساعه ٧:٠٠م، في سهرة روحيه بعنوان “وَدَخَلْتُ مَعَكِ فِي عَهْدٍ” تعالوا وشاركونا.

بقلوب يملؤها الحزن ننعى انتقال المرحوم سمير نقولا،

الزوج الحبيب لسوسن، والأب المحبوب للّيليان وزوجها توني يني.

والجد الفخور لميكايلا، صوفيا، وغابرييلا.

وهو الأخ العزيز لإيفون والمرحوم خليل زكي، ورالف وديانا نقولا، وميرفت وعزت زكي.

وابن العم لكلٍ من جورج وسحر يوسف، ولوسي وسمير تادرس، وميلاد وشميران جوزيف.

كما كان عمًا محبوبًا للكثيرين.
